Greg Helmer

Greg recently published a book titled, “Lead with Endurance.” LwE is a book focused on milestones for improving life and leadership. Greg comes to Hulings and Associates with 20 years of experience in educational leadership, serving in a variety of roles as a Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent. In 2012, Greg was named the MEMSPA Outstanding Principal of Year and in 2013, Greg had the honor of being selected as the NAESP National Distinguished Principal of Year.

Greg has completed a variety of leadership training; including PEAK - Leading for Excellence, LEAN Thinking - Pawley Institute, Kata Model - PEAK Learning Systems, and enjoys coaching leaders from one milestone to the next. Greg specializes in organizational culture, building team, communications, strategic planning, and is a master at facilitating meetings.

Greg received his B.A. from Calvin University, majoring in Education and received his M.A. from Western Michigan University, majoring in Educational Leadership.

Greg is married to Carrie, and together, they have 3 boys. Living near the shoreline of Lake Michigan, the Helmer’s spend a lot of time enjoying the sand dunes, trails, and beaches at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park.

Greg enjoys running and as an endurance athlete, including an attempt to run a sub 4:00 mile to qualify for the USA Olympic Trials. In 2001, Greg averaged 6:34 per mile pace for 26.2 miles at the Chicago Marathon. Greg has also endured some challenges in which he is more than happy to share his learning...conquering Tourette’s Syndrome, managing a brain tumor, and grieving the loss of a highly public position.
